Leading Partner Institutions

The Challenge Program is led by 19 institutions, with over 150 partners participating – each with clearly defined roles. Participation is open to national research organizations and universities, NGOs, international research groups, and CGIAR centers. Project funding is disbursed through a competitive grant scheme that began in 2003.

CGIAR Future Harvest Centers

Synthesize results and produce generic conclusions from all basins and regions; drive knowledge sharing at the international and policy levels.

National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems

Coordinate all work in the basins; work closely with local communities, community-based organizations, universities and government agencies; provide links to regional and locally defined priorities; help drive implementation.

Advanced Research Institutes

Ensure that knowledge produced through the Challenge Program on Water and Food links into the global change research agenda.

International River Basin Organizations

Provide the management perspective on transboundary water issues.

International NGOs

Expand the outreach of the Program and help disseminate research findings and lessons learned on a broad scale.
