New Board expands CPWF's expertise

26. June 2008

Category: General Announcements

The CGIAR Challenge Program for Water and Food is excited to announce the establishment of its first Board. The engagement of the nine member Board’s expertise arises as the CPWF undertakes the development of a new research strategy and revisits its structure for contributing research results on development challenges.

The CPWF’s Consortium Steering Committee decided in February that, as part of the Program’s progress, its active governance should be charged to the duties of a Board. As such, the new CPWF Board now has responsibility for setting the strategic direction of the CPWF and for instituting Program goals.

The CGIAR Challenge Program for Water and Food Board is composed of five independent members, not drawn from CPWF Consortium institutions, one of whom will act as the Chair. The other four members will act as representatives for: the CGIAR Alliance; the NGOs, NARES and ARIs Consortium members; the International Water Management Institute, the lead member of the Consortium; and the ex officio CPWF Program Director. The CPWF team extends a very warm welcome to these nine members:

George Rothschild (Chair and independent member) is an Emeritus Professor of International Development at the University of Greenwich. Among other busy roles, George acts as an adviser to DFID on several programs—including their Research Into Use program for upscaling and outscaling research outputs across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia—and advises the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa on networks, partnerships and alliances.

Barbara Schreiner (independent) is a deeply respected water resources and management consultant from South Africa. Working in high level positions for the RSA Government for over 10 years, most recently Barbara was the Deputy Director General of the Policy and Regulation Branch of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.

Cyrus Ndiritu's (independent) professional commitment is bonded to the resolution of rural Africa's food insecurity and poverty challenges, specifically through enhancing the understanding and applications of techno-innovations in agribusiness. Cyrus was the Executive Director of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute for 12 years and has vast experience as a reviewer of development projects across Africa. He currently runs his own consultancy company.

Walter Falcon (independent) has held the position of the Farnsworth Professor of International Agricultural Policy at Stanford University for more than 30 years. Among other roles, Walter acts as the Deputy Director for the Food Security and Environment Program at Stanford and has contributed as a board member to several CGIAR institutes.

Don Blackmore (independent) is a consultant with expertise on water issues in Australia, South and East Asia and North Africa. Don was the Chief Executive of the Murray-Darling Basin Commission for 14 years; a contribution which earned him a Member of the Order of Australia honour.

Jonathan Woolley (ex officio) is the CPWF Program Director. His participation with the CPWF began in 2003, after working in over 50 countries worldwide for national institutions, like the IAR in Nigeria, to the CGIAR's international research centres. Jonathan's expertise lies in farmers' cropping systems and in development projects which increase farmer participation in agricultural research and extension.

Colin Chartres (IWMI Representative) is the Director General of the International Water Management Institute in Colombo. Over the last 10 years Colin has contributed greatly to the Australian science strategy, knowledge and capacity buidling, particularly during his roles as Chief Science Advisor to Australia's National Water Commission and the Deputy Chief of the CSIRO's Land and Water Division.

Joachim von Braun (Alliance representative) is the Director General of International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington. Joachim is also a member of the Board of Academic Advisors for the Center of Chinese Agricultural Policy and the International Food and Agricultural Trade Policy Council, among others.

Alex McCalla (NGO, NARES, and ARI representative) has more than 40 years of professional commitment to agricultural policy, international trade, agricultural and economic development and world food policy. Alex has a long association with the CGIAR system, as well as the World Bank and the University of California.
