Basin Development Challenges

Andes system (seven small river basins):
To improve rural livelihoods, increase water availability, and reduce water-related conflict through benefit-sharing in selected river basins.

Mekong (Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam):
To reduce poverty and foster development through management of water for multiple uses in large dams and small reservoirs.

Nile (especially Ethiopian highlands):
To improve rural livelihoods and their resilience through a landscape approach to rainwater management.

Ganges delta (India, Bangladesh):
To improve rural livelihoods in tidal-affected areas of the delta through integrated and diversified cropping and aquaculture.

Limpopo (Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa):
To improve rural livelihoods and their resilience through better management of rainwater, including management of small reservoirs.

Volta (Burkina Faso and Ghana):
To improve rural livelihoods and their resilience through better management of rainwater, including management of small reservoirs.


Multiple BDCs in the future
Some basins have a clear demand for at least two – often very different – BDCs.  Additional BDCs may commence later in Phase 2 depending on funding availability.  Potential second BDCs are:

Basin Stakeholder and Inception Workshops

Project selection for the Mekong, Nile and Andes basins is now complete. To begin the implementation of  the Basin Development Challenges, stakeholder workshops and inception workshops were recently conducted.
